JEHOVAH-ROHI "The Lord Our Shepherd"
The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. Psalm 23:1
Sometimes in life we face a dilemma, and we have absolutely no clue of what we should do. On my first visit to the surgeons office, he shared with me his thoughts on the best way to treat the cancer in my breast. This was the same doctor that performed my sister's surgery, however, his recommendations for me were not the same. The entire time that he was speaking to me, I was praying. I felt inadequately prepared to make decisions governing my own body. He performed a lumpectomy on my sister about a year prior to my visit. But because of the nature of the tumor and the fact that it had spread to several areas throughout my breast this would not be the case for me. Therefore, a lumpectomy was not an option for me. My doctor believed it would take a series of lumpectomies and would leave my breast totally disfigured. He suggested that I consider having a mastectomy instead. His rationale was two-fold; it would eliminate the chance of leaving small cancer cells in the breast undetected, and it would look better cosmetically. Honestly, I did not know what to do at this point. I was leaning towards the lumpectomies, because I could not stand the thought of losing my breast.
During this time, I needed God to guide me and help me to make the right decision. It is in Jehovah-Rohi, (the Lord our Shepherd) that we find the most tender, most intimate relationship between Jehovah and His people. God is our Shepherd and we are His sheep. The primary meaning of Rohi is "to feed" or "lead to pasture," as a shepherd does his flock. Everything that the shepherd is to the sheep, Jehovah-Rohi is to His people. Just as the shepherd loves the sheep and will give his life for the sheep, that is the relationship that Jehovah-Rohi has with us.
Verse: The Lord is my Shepherd..
The LORD is My Shepherd. (Declaration of God's Role)
The Lord is MY Shepherd. (Statement of our Relationship)
The Lord is my SHEPHERD. (Testimony of God's Responsibility)
David had tended sheep himself, so he understood the responsibility, sacrifice, and value of making provision, pasturing, and protecting these fragile animals. We too are sheep in need of a shepherd. We are fragile, directionless, hopeless, and if left to ourselves will destroy ourselves. (say Bah!)
God helped me to make the best decision in relation to my health. I began to trust God as my protector on this cancer journey. I asked Him to take my life and direct me in the right path for my healing. The bible says that the steps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord. He helped me to understand that my breast do not define me. I am fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God and that remains the same. Cancer does not have the power to change who I am and neither does sickness, disease, or infirmity have the power to change who you are!
